Low Rise LA

This proposal responds to this housing challenge by turning inward on LA, carving out spaces within the existing single-family block and gathering structures into small protected clusters that balance light and air, comfort and productivity. A series of prefabricated timber boxes contain dwelling unit elements - bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, living room, etc. These can be grouped and stacked in different ways to create various building configurations using a simple ‘kit of parts’. Residences can be configured with one, two, three or four-bedrooms. The cellular organization allows intermediate units that have direct street access to be configured as studios, office spaces, retail units or small shared community spaces to maximize flexibility.
